A baby of 1 year old, escaped serious injury after falling from a balcony of the second floor, while her mother smoked marijuana, Phoenix police said.
Elizabeth Montijo, 23, was booked into jail on one count of child abuse and one count of possession of marijuana.
Officers said the woman left her door open on Monday when the baby fell 10 to 12 feet from the balcony of the apartment.
City workers standing nearby said they tried to get Montijo call the police or fire rescue, but Montijo
called a friend to come over and take the child to the hospital.
When police entered the residence, officers said they detected a strong odor of marijuana and saw open bottles of alcohol on the kitchen table, prescription pills in bottles lying on the floor and the sliding glass door of the terrace open.
Montijo handed over a small bag of marijuana that was hidden in the hall closet, police said.
Phoenix firefighters arrived at the scene and rushed the child to the hospital. The baby is expected to recover.
