Covina police Lt. Holly Francisco says when police arrived on Friday they found the suspect, who attempted to steal clothes and body soap, was held by store security, and apparently needed medical help.
Officers called paramedics and the suspect was pronounced dead later at a hospital.
Walmart Stores spokeswoman Dianna Gee says the loss of life is a sad situation, but there are many unknowns at this time.
Gee said security personnel have been suspended pending the outcome of an investigation including video surveillance and an autopsy to determine cause of death. It is unclear why security did not call the paramedics.
