|5,000 kids form a massive shark image on a California beach|
The massive group standing at Dockweiler State Beach to form the shape of a large, ferocious-looking shark with a spear and a shield that says: "Defend the Sea."
Before joining the shark event, volunteers walked the beach, picking up trash from the sand.
The purpose of this annual event, according to its organizers, was to alert the public about the need to protect the world's oceans of garbage and plastic waste, which kill marine life and contaminate food resources.
"As the second largest city in the United States, Los Angeles plays a key role in defining environmental priorities of the nation," Los Angeles Board of Public Works President Andrea Alarcon told the news media.
"Here in Los Angeles, our greatest allies are doing great work so are our children have a wonderful clean future."
