|Fat father lost custody of his kids because of his weight|
However, does being obese make a loving parent unfit to raise his children?
A 360 pound 38 year old father from Ottawa, Canada was forced to fight for custody of his children after his doctor reported that he was too fat to care for his 5 and 6 year old children.
The doctor conducting the court ordered medical examination explained, “He was short of breath or winded in simply walking short distances about the clinic and he lacks both the mobility and stamina required to keep up with young and active children.”
The father had been fighting for custody of his children for a year until he finally received Superior Court Justice M. James’ ruling. Judge James felt that losing the weight necessary was already a full time job for the father; that he wouldn’t have enough time and energy to lose weight and simultaneously care for his children.
The father was especially dismayed because the judge chose to disregard the fact that he had already lost 150 pounds.
He explicated, “The only thing they have against me is my weight. I’m not too fat to be a dad. I can be a good dad. I almost ate myself to death but these days I eat really healthy meals.”
The children’s mother was institutionalized after a mental breakdown and possible overdose. The poor father lost his case and his children were put into foster care.
This case is truly perplexing. With all of the incapable parents out there, how can children of a loving father who is working on himself be forced into the foster care system unnecessarily?
