With the rise of surrogate births, assisted reproduction, single parenthood, and same-sex parenthood, passing this legislation would allow new possibilities for the children of these households.
Benjamin Lopez, analyst for the Traditional Values Coalition was disgusted by the proposition to “revamp, redefine, and muddy the waters” of the traditional family structure. “It comes as no surprise that he would try to say that a child has more than two parents- that’s absurd.” Lopez considers himself and the Tradition Values Coalition leaders in the voice of Bible-based values. His reason for the proposal may stem from the fact that it would provide equal rights to lesbian and gay couples.
As expected, homosexuality is not supported by the Tradition Values Coalition and is viewed as a great sin. However, if Leno’s proposal is passed, there will be new options for a wide range of children. It would help families with divorced parents who remarry, same-sex couples who used artificial reproductive technology, and same-sex couples with children. It would enhance children of the aforementioned families financial support, health insurance, social security benefits, maximizing their potentials and easing their financial responsibilities. Davis gay rights activist, Ellen Pontiac said that she and her wife had children prior to their thirty eight year old relationship.
She fully understands how an individual can act as a child’s parent despite no biological relation. She feels that providing others the opportunity to have the legal parental rights that she and her wife wished they had could enhance their quality of life. It is fascinating to note the rapid progression that has occurred over the past decade; it was only several years ago that gay marriage was legalized, and now multiple parents is being proposed.
