You wouldn’t suspect a police chief of stealing and definitely not stealing from a stripper.

A suspended Rhode Island police chief has been convicted of stealing $714 from the pocket of a stripper after a police chase in Pawtucket during Tropical Storm Irene.

A Providence County Superior Court judge convicted North Providence Police Colonel  of theft over $500 and the request for receiving stolen goods.

Pawtucket police officer John Brown testified that Whiting confessed to stealing the money after chasing a Ford Explorer during the storm. Brown said Whiting told him to take the money with instructions to spend it in Las Vegas and say nothing.

Whiting, 58 years old, had denied the robbery, saying he took the money he found in the van as evidence and then handed it to Brown.
