A young teen girl will be severely punished when she turns 18, according to reports in the news media.
A court in Maldives has ordered 100 lashes and eight months of house arrest for a 16-year-old girl convicted of having sex with a young man, according to a report in the news media.
She confessed "to having sex with the 29-year-old after her family pressed charges against the young man.
The man was convicted of having sex with a minor and sentenced this week to 10 years in prison, according to reports in the local news media.
The couple was found having sex in Raa Atoll, about 200 kilometers or 125 miles north of the island of Male, the capital of Maldives, the report said, adding that the girl would be beaten when she reaches adulthood at age 18.
"As she is legally a minor, the court stated that the sentence would apply when the girl was 18, according to reports in the local news media.
It was not immediately clear if the couple had sex.
The court ruling came after the UN Human Rights spokesman, Navi Pillay, urged the head of the Maldives to stop publicly flogging women for having extramarital sex.
Pillay said during a visit to the country that the Maldives had made progress in protecting the rights of its 330,000 Sunni Muslims, but there was still much to be done to protect women.
The flogging is usually transmitted as a punishment by village heads who also act as judges. A cane is used in the lashing.
The Maldives, best known as a luxury tourist destination, adopted multiparty democracy in 2008, but given political instability it led to the resignation of the first elected president, Mohamed Nasheed, in February.
