Phoenix, Arizona police have identified a man who shot himself in front of officers after he took them on a chase that ended with his suicide on national broadcast television.

Police spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson says 33-year-old Jodon F. Romero was a wanted criminal who stole a car at gunpoint Friday midmorning. Thompson said Saturday that an officer shot Romero just before he committed suicide in the desert west of Phoenix, but apparently was not hit.

The chase was being followed by a television news helicopter and was broadcast live on Fox News. The network was unable to cut the line before Romero shot himself.

Thompson said that Romero had a criminal record for violence and was wanted for probation violations. Fox News later apologized for airing the gruesome suicide on live national TV.
