A surveillance video showed the victims in Newark, New Jersey, leaping to safety.

A New Jersey woman and her five children jumped from the window of an apartment on the third floor early Wednesday after a fire engulfed the residence, according to press reports.

The fire started in the apartment in Newark at approximately 12:30 am, hours after the family moved from a shelter into the home, according a local radio station.

Surrounded by flames and smoke, the family began to jump from an apartment window. Neighbors attempted to break the falls of the victims on the ground.

"As they were jumping, smoke, thick smoke, had just come out of the apartment at full force. The kids were jumping out. I could not believe that we were literally catching them from the window," resident Christopher Calypso said.

The 39-year-old, and their children, who are aged between six and 17, were taken to a nearby hospital. All the victims were in stable condition.

Authorities believe the fire was caused by an unattended candle in the bathroom of the apartment. It took about 20 minutes for firefighters to control the fire.
