(Scroll down for video) Members of her community are wondering what exactly caused police to shoot and kill a naked woman in her own backyard.

Investigators said an unidentified woman, who was not wearing clothes was shot and killed Saturday afternoon by two off-duty police officers.

It all started when the woman approached a house located at 9070 Orchard Parkway when a party was going on.

Rocky Allen Howard, a detective who is 31-years-old, with the Hernando County Sheriff's Office and William Mechler, an officer who is 26-years-old, with the Tampa Police Department, attended the party.

Authorities said that in addition to being completely naked the woman was acting strangely. "She was acting irrational," Hernando County Sheriff Al Neinhuis said. "Obviously by being naked she was not in her right mind."

Sheriff Neinhuis further stated that the unidentified woman finally left. Someone called 911 to report the incident. When the deputies arrived on the scene to investigate she returned. "She came back with a weapon and confronted both officers," Neinhuis added.

Detectives have not said what type of weapon the deceased had. The weapon apparently seemed dangerous enough for officers who felt the need to use deadly force. "She came with a weapon and I would assume that they felt their life was in danger," Neinhuis said.

Detective Howard, who has worked for the Hernando County Sheriff's Office for six years, has been placed on administrative leave with pay after the incident. Tampa police said that Mechler, has also been placed on paid administrative leave while officials of the Florida Police Department investigate.
