A report by the All Party Parliamentary Body Image group and the Central YMCA members recommended putting "discrimination laws based on appearance" in the same legal status as racial and sexual discrimination.
Under the equalities Act of 2010, it is illegal to harass, victimize or discriminate against any person on the basis of a number of "protected" characteristics such as race, gender, sexual orientation, age or disability.
The parliamentary group with the support of the Central YMCA charity, today published a report, Reflections On Body Image, which recommends "a revision in the meaning of discrimination to include harassment based on appearances."
It continues: "You can explore whether an amendment to the Equalities Act would be the most appropriate way to address such discrimination."
Under current law, people can and are prosecuted for verbal abuse if deemed serious enough.
Under the new law, verbal abuse based on appearance will be classified as a hate crime.
