Huge whale nearly slaps boat into the ocean

Just a few feet closer and the whale would have destroyed their ship with just one big slap.

A group of fishermen caught on video more than they bargained for during a recent excursion off the coast of Canada.

As their lures bobbed in the choppy water in search of salmon and halibut on a Vancouver Island near Tofino, British Columbia, a humpback whale came slowly to their ship. Then, when the whale was just a few feet away, the powerful mammal leapt into the air before diving back into the water by belly-flop.

And it was all captured on video.

"Holy crap," a person in the iPhone video can be heared screaming. "That was like oh man, it was about to jump into our boat."
The incident occurred near the end of July, according to reports.

Matthew Thornton, who served as a guide on the fishing charter, also took a photo of the humpback whale in flight.

"While on our way to fish for halibut and salmon, we realized a few humpback whales playing in the distance and stopped by them to see them closer," he wrote in a caption on the website of National Geographic, where the photo was submitted as part of a contest.

"It was quite an experience to see something completely airborne as close to the boat," he said.
“We are also extremely lucky to be alive,” he said.
