Many Canadians are taking advantage of the recent surge of the Canadian dollar by shopping across the border, with cheap milk and gas just two of the main attractions, but some Americans are fed up with the crowd from across the border.
Some residents of Bellingham, Washington, began to complain on a Facebook page and demanded for American-only hours at the local Costco.
In the Facebook page called "Costco Bellingham needs a special time for Americans," the residents write they have been stripped of milk in seconds.
Some write that they have to wait in long lines at the Costco gas station as the Canadians need to fill their cars, and then their gas cans.
Others have posted pictures of the cars with B.C. plates that span more than one parking space.
Some only complain of Canadians being rude.
Ken Oplinger, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Bellingham / Whatcom, is urging local people to have patience for the Canadian visitors. Without them, he said, the living situation that we currently enjoy in the city and county would be very different.
"In the past two years, our sales tax generation has doubled or tripled the pace of the state, and is almost entirely due to the Canadians coming south," he said.
The administrator of the Facebook page, which had over 2,000 "likes" since Sunday sent a message earlier this week telling Canadians that are not being blamed.
"To our Canadian friends, who think that we hate you. You have to look at the root of the problem. Bellingham has laws that prevent companies from extending to prevent overcrowding in this small town,” a message on Facebook states.
A spokesman said that the Bellingham Costco store is bursting at the seams, and the company would like to expand the store in Bellingham.
It also wants to install more lines and pumps in their gas station, but there is no room to do so on the current property.
