|98-year-old message in a bottle|
A fisherman off the coast of Scotland, found a very old bottle in the ocean with a message in it.
It was collected from the sea after 98 years, and now officials say the message in the bottle has set a world record.
Fisherman Andrew Leaper found the bottle that was put into the water in 1914. The bottle showed up in his nets in April, while sailing east of the Shetland Islands, located off the north coast of Scotland.
Guinness World Records confirmed this week that the finding is the oldest message in a bottle ever recovered, surpassing a previous record of 93 years.
It was released in a batch of 1,890 bottles in a government experiment to map the undercurrents of the seas around Scotland.
Within each bottle, a postcard asks the finder to record the details of the discovery, and promises a reward of six pence.
Unfortunately for Leaper, the coin is not in production anymore.
