(Scroll down for video) A woman was charged with murder after beheading a man she claims raped her several times.
The woman in Turkey, is now awaiting trial after beheading the man, who she said raped her repeatedly for months, and is the father of her unborn child. Her lawyer said the woman killed the man to protect her honor.
Nevin Yildirim, a 26-year-old mother of two, lives in a small town in southwestern Turkey. She said the man, Nurettin Gider, began the attack a few days after her husband left for a seasonal job in another city.
Yildirim said Gider threatened her with a gun and said he was going to kill her children, ages 2 and 6, if she made any noise. That was the first of the repeated violations over the next eight months.
At one point, Yildirim said that Gider sneaked into her house while she was asleep and took pictures of her. One picture showed her pregnant body. Gider threatened to post the photos if she did not obey.
In small towns like hers, honor remains above all, and women bear the burden of honor for their families. Images like those would have been devastating for Yildirim and her family.
On August 28, at least five months pregnant by a man who she said has continued to violate her, Yildirim said that she decided she had enough.
"When Gider climbed the back wall of her house, I knew he was going to rape me again," she said in her preliminary hearing.
She said she grabbed the gun from her father-in-law, which was hanging on the wall, and shot him. He tried to draw his gun and she shot him again.
"I chased him," she said. "He fell on the floor. He was silent. I knew he was dead. Then I cut off his head," she said.
Witnesses described Yildirim entering the town square, dragging the man's head by the hair with blood dripping on the floor.
