A cat is reported to be safe after several dogs tried to reach it while it was hiding in the engine compartment of a minivan.

The dogs attacked, flattening the tires of the Southern California vehicle, biting off chunks of the fender and ripping off the bumper.

Four pit bull terriers had chased the kitten into the engine compartment of the Dodge minivan.

The owner of the vehicle also owned the four pit bull dogs.

The vehicle owner changed the tires on Monday, and drove 25 miles from Banning to Palm Springs, before discovering the 7-week-old kitten, which had been relaxing in the hollow portion of the front bumper.

An animal control officer freed the kitten after a 40-minute process that included the removal of the bumper.

The kitten is fine and available for adoption at the Animal Shelter of Palm Springs, California.
