A pregnant 21-year-old Jessica Miracle of Tazewell, Tennessee, went to the Claiborne County hospital emergency room with labor pains.

The doctor in charge felt that Miracle was in danger. He therefore told Miracle that she had to be transferred by ambulance to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Miracle, who was accompanied by her boyfriend, Ronnie Ray Smith, decided against the doctor’s warning and they left the hospital on their own.

The doctor who saw Miracle leave, warned her that if she left the hospital, "She and her baby would be in danger and they could die.”

As soon as Miracle walked out of the hospital and into the hospital parking lot, she went into heavy labor. Ms. Miracle started walking back to Claiborne County hospital, but she did not make it on time, her baby was born on the floor of the parking lot and her newborn son passed away a short time later.

Miracle was taken to UT Medical Center for treatment, where she was arrested.

"She decided she was going to leave and signed herself out against medical advice," the Tazewell Police Chief Mark Lamb said.

Court records do not indicate why the doctor thought miracle required specialized treatment.

At first, she was charged with second-degree murder, then after further consultation with the district attorney's office, the charge was amended to aggravated child abuse and neglect.

Miracle was released from the Claiborne County Jail after posting $50,000 bail.
