A little girl dressed up in a costume that one man believed to be a skunk, according to police.

Police said that a disguised 9-year-old girl, was accidentally shot outside a house in western Pennsylvania, at a party by a relative, who thought she was a real skunk.

New Sewickley Township Police said that the girl was on a hill, and was wearing a black suit and a black hat with a white tassel. Chief Ronald Leindecker said that a male relative mistook her for a skunk and fired a shotgun, hitting her in the shoulder on Saturday night.

Leindecker said that the girl was alert and talking when she was taken to a hospital in Pittsburgh, about 30 miles away. Her condition was not available.

Leindecker said the man had not been drinking and he did not know if charges will be filed.

Officers on Saturday night, were still investigating and collecting statements. The case was given over to the prosecutor's office of Beaver County, Leindecker said.

Police also warned children to exercise caution when they dress up.
