An Ohio man, who is accused of raping a woman at gunpoint, appeared in court with a bandage over his right eye, an injury police said he got after the woman shot him in the face before escaping.

Duane Portman Sr., the alleged attacker, pleaded not guilty in Clark County Court on Friday, and was being held on a $50,000 bond.

Portman, 44, is accused of kidnapping a woman and taking her to the Labelz 4 Less store in Springfield, where he worked as a cleaner.

That's where Portman allegedly put a gun to the head of the woman and raped her around 3:00 a.m. on September 2. She was able to get hold of the gun and shoot him in the face.

At that time, she fled and went alone to a hospital in Dayton, according to reports.

"I'm glad she's safe and I think he deserved what was coming to him," Angela Bozarth, a store customer, said adding: "I think I feel safe enough to come to the store during the day and I think with enough people around that I'll be fine."

Portman was shot twice in the face and drove himself to a hospital in Springfield, where he seemed confused.

At that time, he was unable to tell police what happened. It was not immediately clear how he knew the woman.

Portman is due back in court on Monday.
