A New York City mom came home on Thursday, to find her two young children stabbed to death in a bathtub, police said. The nanny that took care of them was seen sitting in a pool of blood with a kitchen knife.

The children, 2 and 6-years-old, were found dead in an apartment building called The Rochelleon on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. It is unclear how many times they were stabbed.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said that the mother arrived to the dark apartment near Central Park on Thursday night, and thought that the nanny had taken the children out.

The police found the nanny on the floor of the bathroom, and said that she had stab wounds that are believed to be self-inflicted.

Sources said that she cut her wrists in a failed suicide attempt.

"Something happened to my children," cried the mother, according to witnesses.

A neighbor said she heard someone shout: "You cut their throat!"

The mother called 911.

Both children were taken to St. Luke Center-Roosevelt Hospital, but were pronounced dead on arrival. The mother who was taken to the same hospital, had to be sedated.

The babysitter is hospitalized in critical condition and in police custody.
