A ship with a crew of nine people and 700 tons of gold ore on board has disappeared in the stormy seas of the Pacific Coast, off Russia.

The ship sent a distress call on Sunday, while sailing from the coastal city of Neran to Feklistov Island in the Sea of Okhotsk.

The ship, hired by mining company Polymetal, carried 700 tons of gold ore from one tank to another where it would be processed. Gold ore is the material from which gold is extracted and contains only a small percentage of the precious metal.

A Polymetal spokesperson on Monday, could not give the exact value of the load. The company said it has shipped gold ore in this way before and there was nothing unusual on shipping by sea.
