A woman was arrested and charged with killing her newborn baby just a few hours after giving birth, according to police reports.
The woman from Athens, Georgia, was charged with murder on Friday morning, after being accused of killing her baby, possibly a few minutes or hours after birth.
Around 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, authorities responded to a 911 call reporting a dead body of a newborn who was found in a house in Athens, according to a news release from the police. The baby's body had stab wounds and possible cuts, police said.
Police issued an arrest warrant on Thursday night, for the mother, 21-year-old Cassandra Elyse Norwood. She was charged and booked into jail on Friday morning, according to police.
Until the autopsy is complete, the police are still not sure how soon after birth the baby died, but it could have been just a few minutes or hours after the birth, Athens-Clarke County Police Capt. Clarence Holeman said on Friday.
No one else was in the house at the time of the murder, and police are looking for the baby's father.
A cause of death has not been released.
