A boy was charged with animal cruelty after he hanged his dog because he just wanted to watch it die, according to police.

The 12-year-old boy from California, allegedly hanged his little dog on a door handle to see it die in a disturbing case of animal cruelty.

"I was angry with the dog, so I killed him," the unidentified boy told investigators after the incident happened on Friday in Salinas, police said.

"I wanted to see him die," the boy allegedly bragged to police officers.

Police found the dead dog after the boy’s 19-year-old sister called 911 and crying that he "is hurting the dog," a spokesperson for the Salinas Police said.

"She was trying to intervene, and he battered her," Officer Miguel Cabrera said. "So she left the apartment with a second dog, trying to protect it."

Investigators visited the address for a welfare check a little while later. They could hear a loud television working inside the home, but no one answered, they said.

A building manager helped them enter with a master key. That is when officers found the 12-pound terrier still hanging by its neck from a bedroom door handle, police said.

The 12-year-old came out from the same room and spontaneously admitted his involvement in the heinous act, Cabrera said.

The sister returned shortly thereafter and told officers that the boy took the dog's life. He said it was not clear what caused the boy's anger.

The child, who had no criminal record, was booked into Monterey County Juvenile Hall for his sister's battery and grave cruelty to an animal charges, Cabrera said.

"He was very verbal with officers and showed no remorse," he said.

"I've been in the police for 20 years, and I've never heard of something like this involving a person so young. This obviously shows that there are some serious problems to be addressed," Cabrera said Monday.
