An old popular Hollywood figure admitted to slapping a homeless man across the face, according to reports.
The 82-year-old winner of an Oscar, admitted to slapping a homeless man in the face this afternoon, saying that the man approached him and his wife, Betsy, in a threatening manner, and called Betsy a derogatory name, New Mexico police confirmed.
Sgt. Andrea Dobyns said that the man on the receiving end of the slap called authorities around 1:30 p.m., to report that he was slapped by Gene Hackman.
The responding officers were able to talk to both the caller and Hackman, who was still in the area after eating at a nearby restaurant.
The “Unforgiven” star told police that a man approached him and Betsy very aggressively, called his wife an ugly name and otherwise made them fear for their safety.
The man got into his face, according to Hackman, and he gave him a slap across the face.
Hackman seems to have regained his strength since he was hit by a car while riding his bike.
The man had no visible injuries and no one was arrested or cited for the altercation.
"It seemed that Mr. Hackman did this out of pure self-defense to protect himself and his wife," police said.
