A man killed his son and severely injured his daughter after he was angry about his recent separation from his wife, according to reports.

The Bronx, New York, man drowned his 5-year-old son in a bathtub and then fed his 7-year-old daughter rat poison, police sources said on Wednesday.

Leonardo Espinal was caring for the children in a University Heights apartment that belonged to his stepmother when he called the mother of the children, from whom he was separated, and threatened to kill himself, sources said.

The alarmed mother, Rosa Abreu, called Espinal’s stepmother, who found the girl sleeping in her own vomit on a couch and the suspect locked in a bathroom with the boy, police said.

The police broke down the door and found Espinal’s son Stewart, who was naked and unconscious, in his arms, the sources said.

The children’s mother came to the apartment as the police were making the heartbreaking discovery.

"Leo killed my baby," she later told family friend Francisco Medrano.

Abreu and Espinal had been together for nearly a decade before she kicked him out of her apartment on Walton St. about 15 days ago, Medrano, 42, said.

"I guess the only reason he would do something like this is revenge for the separation," Medrano said.

Little Stewart and his sister Mia, were taken to Saint Barnabas Hospital, where Stewart died at 2:50 a.m. on Wednesday. His sister survived.
