|The two Courtneys|
(Scroll down for video) A New Jersey School crossing guard placed a frantic call to police after seeing a young girl getting into an unfamiliar car.
A man was almost arrested on abduction charges after picking up the wrong girl from school. Art Deaner picked up 9-year-old Courtney, who he does not know, instead of the 6-year-old Courtney he was supposed to take home.
As a favor to the girl’s mother, Deaner went to the Gloucester City School in New Jersey, to pick up six-year-old Courtney Fetters. Instead, he drove away with nine-year-old Courtney Durr. The mistaken identity almost landed him in jail.
“I was looking for her Courtney, and this young girl said her name was Courtney.” Deaner said. Nine-year-old Courtney Durr, was also expecting one of her mother's friends to pick her up from school that day, therefore she went into Deaner's car.
Meanwhile, the girl who Deaner was suppose to take home, waited at the school. Deaner has not seen her in several weeks and she'd gotten a haircut, so he didn't recognize her. Deaner didn't realize he had the wrong Courtney until they'd driven a few blocks.
While driving her home, Deaner asked the girl about a recent family vacation, but when the girl had no idea what he was talking about, Deaner knew he'd made a terrible mistake.
"Weren't you with Aunt Mary in Maine?" He asked Courtney. “No, I have never have been in Maine,” the girl replied.
“I knew Courtney was in Maine for two weeks,” said Deaner. “At that moment I turned around and took her back to school. I knew I must of gotten the wrong Courtney,” he added.
Police were already looking for Deaner after the crossing guard who saw Courtney climb into an unfamiliar car, alerted police. An officer pulled over Deaner and nearly arrested him for abduction.
After Deaner explained what happened, officers questioned him as well as Courtney. It became clear it was a simple mix-up. He was let go and no charges were filed.
Luckily, the situation had a happy ending. The girls learned a lesson not to go into someone's car when they don't know them. As for Deaner, he said in the future he will take along a picture of the girl he goes to pick up.
