A woman and her son were brutally killed while visiting a jail compound, according to jail officials.
The woman and her teen son were hacked to death by an inmate while they were inside the Masbate Provincial Jail compound in Barangay Matiporon, Milagros, on Sunday afternoon, police said Monday.
Philippine prison authorities have yet to explain why the prisoner was out of his cell and how he was able to kill the two with a machete. It was still unclear why the victims were in the grounds of the prison, according to Superintendent Heriberto Olitoquit, the Masbate police chief.
Olitoquit said that Tessie, 50, her son Jayson, 15, and Rommel Buhia, were attacked by inmate Rey Esparaguerra, 33, in the grounds of the provincial jail at 3:00 p.m.
Olitoquit said that Tessie and Jayson died instantly, while Buhia was rushed by the jail guard to De Castro Hospital in the city proper, where he was fighting for his life.
Prison officials seized a 55 centimeter long machete from Esparaguerra. The police official said an investigation was underway to determine the motive and other circumstances in the attack.
The city proper of Milagros is 22 kilometers west of Masbate City, the provincial capital, while the provincial jail is about 7 km from the city proper of Milagros.
