|Barry McCarney with baby in hospital|
(Scroll down for video) A man rushed his girlfriend’s baby to a hospital after he physically and sexually abused her. Sadly, the baby died a day after being admitted to the hospital.
Barry McCarney, 33, was convicted of sexual assault and serious bodily harm of baby Millie Martin, after rushing her to the local hospital.
CCTV cameras captured McCarney, running into the Erne Hospital in Northern Ireland, cradling his girlfriend’s 15-month-old daughter Millie Martin in his arms. He was not a concerned stepfather who wanted the best for the child, since he was the one who abused her in the first place.
McCarney met Martin only three months before the tragic incident. At first, he blamed the girl’s mother, Rachel Martin, for the abuse.
Both of them were arrested. Rachel was charged with allowing her daughter's death and cruelty through willful neglect. McCarney was charged with physically and sexually abusing the child.
McCarney physically and sexually abused the baby until she was left with a number of fatal wounds, including a head injury that killed her, the court heard during a ten-week trial. A pathologist found that Millie, had suffered 21 broken ribs, including 14 that occurred within ten days prior to her death.
The prosecution described the sexual assault attacks on the baby as vile and sadistic. After the lengthy trial, Rachel was found not guilty of all charges.
Her brother, Matthew, speaking on behalf of the family, said that the decision to prosecute Rachel was shocking at a time when she should have been left to grieve for her baby, Millie.
McCarney, has been convicted of murder and his sentence is pending.
