Shalema Gaskin, who lives four blocks from the hospital, had been there all day with her daughter Briana, and the girl's father, Mark Miley, the police official said. She left at 8:00 p.m. Monday, to go home and put her 6-year-old daughter to bed.

Family members said Gaskin returned to the hospital sometime around 2:00 a.m. to find Miley and Briana asleep in the hospital room. A nurse told the family that she had seen the woman go out of the room and down the stairs. What happened next is still unclear.

The police have surveillance footage of the attack, the official said. It was unclear if there were cameras near the crime scene.

Detectives spent much of the day combing vacant lots and neighborhood streets for clues. A uniformed police officer is guarding the crime scene where blood stains remained on the wall of the hospital.

A police official said that police had been called involving four domestic disturbances, including a discussion between her and her former husband. However, the official said that the hospital staff did not see them fighting and the husband did not leave her daughter's side Monday night.

"My daughter came out, probably to smoke a cigarette," Shalema’s mom Tanya said. "She did not tell anyone she was going, because she was thinking of going back inside."
