Zookeepers in San Diego, California, have been having a hard time getting the panda cub, Xiao Liwu, to sit for its regular checkups. This week, they found out that just like a child, the bear can be calmed with a toy.

"Its favorite toy today, is definitely the ball. The bear is enjoying hugging, rolling over and doing that kind of rolly dropping things that panda cubs are so cute in doing very well," Beth Bicknese, chief veterinarian at the zoo, said in a video statement.

"The bear is using its mouth right now as a kind of fifth hand," Bicknese said, describing how Xiao Liwu is using its mouth to explore different textures, from bamboo to the hands of its owners.

Now, 20 weeks old, it weighs 14.5 pounds and measures 29 inches from nose to tail during its check up on Tuesday, zoo officials said.

Zoo keepers are waiting for the bear to become a better and stronger follower and climber before it will be put on public exhibition.
