(Scroll down for video) A convicted murderer behind bars successfully forced taxpayers to pay for his sex change procedure, according to court proceedings.

Now, a federal judge said that he entered an order against the state of Massachusetts, to pay more than $700,000 in legal fees to a convicted murderer, who successfully sued for the state funded sex change.

Judge Mark Wolf said Wednesday, that he will decide the exact amount at a later time.

The judge ruled that gender reassignment surgery is the only proper treatment for Michelle Kosilek for gender identity disorder and awarded Kosilek compensation for legal fees.

It was the first time a judge has ordered prison officials to provide sex reassignment surgery for an inmate. The state is appealing and will not comment.

The judge said that the state already has paid large legal fees in other prisoners' rights cases. Kosilek lawyers have offered to dismiss their application if the state withdraws its appeal.

Kosilek used to be named Robert when he was convicted of the 1990 murder of his wife.
