6 female teachers shot and killed on their way to community center (video)

(Scroll down for video) The deadly assault against female teachers and health workers in Pakistan, is escalating after 6 female teachers were killed while riding in a van on their way to a community center.

A police official said that unidentified gunmen ambushed a van of teachers in northwestern Pakistan, killing six teachers and a man who drove the vehicle.

The police chief in the town of Swabi, Abdur Rasheed, said that the truck was carrying teachers working for an Non Governmental Agency or NGO, that went to a community center. Gunmen attacked the van on the outskirts of Swabi on Tuesday.

Rasheed did not identify the name of the organization.

Many members of the conservative Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where the attack occurred, oppose female education and female students have been attacked and exploited in their schools.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Taliban in nearby Afghanistan, vowed to crack down on females getting any type of education.
