(Scroll down for video) A hit and run driver slammed into 4 dogs, killing them and injuring its 2 owners, according to police reports in California.
A couple walking their four dogs were hit by the driver, who eyewitnesses said was going as fast as 80 miles per hour on a residential street.
The accident hit-and-run occurred at the intersection of Garfield and Engle Road in Carmichael at 10:00 p.m. Monday.
Gemily West, 23, and Harison Long-Randall, 21, were identified by friends as the stricken family.
Authorities said Tuesday afternoon, that they are looking for a brown or metallic Nissan Altima or Maxima in connection with the accident.
The driver hit a stop sign, slamming the sign down to the floor, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The car kept going, hitting the couple and their four dogs, friends of the victims, said. A witness said that when he went to help the victims, he realized the man's leg was severed and laying on the ground about 30 feet away.
The four dogs were thrown across the road. "The female victim was screaming, 'my dogs, my dogs, my dogs,’” according to witnesses on the scene.
Besides the amputated leg, the man suffered a hip fracture and the female victim suffered a broken leg.
The four dogs died from their injuries. The couple was taken to a nearby hospital, where they are in serious but stable condition. Officers were able to gather some evidence about the car at the scene.
