The gruesome discovery was made in Porpoise Bay on Sunday, by the young girl, who was on holiday in Perth Rottnest Island in Western Australia with her family.
"We believe that they are the remains of a human head," Denise Grant, who is an inspector, said.
"However, we have yet to confirm this. We cannot confirm until forensic pathologists have completed their review," Grant added.
Police did not confirm in what the remains were found in, but eyewitnesses said it was inside several plastic bags. Police said that the head seems to belong to a man between 30 to 50 years old. Police identified the young girl as an 11 year old who was walking with her mother.
