A little girl who was raped by her father, will face a punishment of lashes in public, according to court proceedings in the Maldives.
The 15-year-old girl of the Maldives, whose father is accused of repeatedly raping her and murdering her baby, now faces the punishment of being flogged for fornication with another man under strict Islamic law of the nation, a Police source said.
During the course of the investigation into the rape case, investigators said that they have unearthed evidence that the girl had consensual sex with another man, which is a crime in the Indian Ocean holiday destination, police said.
Women, including minors, who have consensual sex outside of marriage can be lashed in the Maldives. Minors are punished when they reach 18, the age of majority.
The child's stepfather is accused by police of repeatedly raping the girl and he also had a son with her, who was later murdered. The girl's mother has been accused of helping to get rid of the baby, police said.
"We have completed the investigation into the murder of the baby and submitted a report to the attorney general's office," Maldives police spokesman Hassan Haneef said.
He declined to give further details, saying that the law did not allow discussions of any matter relating
to a minor.
The legal system of the Maldives, a nation of 330,000 Sunni Muslims known for its coral fringed islands and sandy beaches, has elements of Islamic Sharia and English common law.
The country holds public flogging of women despite calls from the U.N. Human Rights Council to abandon the practice.
In September, a court ordered a Maldivian public flogging of a 16-year-old girl, who admitted having sex before marriage. Her 29-year-old lover was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
