(Scroll down for video) Police have released the 911 calls that people made after they mistook a dog for a lion in Virginia, according to video uploaded to the Internet.
Some residents of Virginia Beach, were startled Tuesday night, when they mistook a 3-year-old Labradoodle for a young lion thanks to its unusual haircut.
The dog belonging to Daniel Painter, "Charles the Monarch," is called as such because it resembles the king of the jungle.
Police received calls on Tuesday, about a young lion on the loose. Police contacted the nearby Norfolk Zoo to ensure that their two lions were in their cages, which they were.
Newly released 911 recordings captured residents' surprise and confusion to see Charles. "There was a lion that ran down the street, a lion cub," a woman can be heard telling a 911 operator.
She adds: "It was the size of a Labrador retriever."
"I saw a lion. A baby lion!" Another man tells 911. "It had the mange and all that."
Painter groomed his dog to make it look like a lion in honor of the Old Dominion University mascot Big Blue the lion.
Because Painter and Charles live near the zoo, Painter said that this is not the first time people have been deceived by the dog.
"I've seen it literally dive through the window to get in the car thinking it was a lion," a man said.
