The couple, who is lesbian, were dining in a cafe in North Carolina. The couple was given a letter that condemned homosexuality as being against God's will.

Arielle and Shawnee McPhail went to The Sting Ray Cafe in New Bern. Upon their departure, the restaurant owner Ed McGovern, approached the couple and handed them a letter asking them to reevaluate their lives.

The letter stated in part: “Please, look at your lives. See how it hurts everyone around you. Ask the Lord to open your eyes before it is too late. Find the love of Christ. P.S. My daughter was gay. It destroyed her life and the life of my grandson.”

"First off, we did not kiss. We do not kiss in public. We were just holding hands," Shawnee McPhail said.

"Second, if I did kiss my wife in public, what married couple would you go to and say, 'How dare you. You cannot hold hands and kiss in public therefore you deserve to be punished.’"

Since the news about the anti-gay letter of Sting Ray Cafe hit the press, the negative reviews have been pouring in from all over the world.
