Twin brothers chose to be euthanized after a doctor told them that they were going blind.

The twins, who were deaf, could not bear the thought of going blind and never seeing each other again.

Marc and Eddy Verbessem, lived in Belgium, when they chose to die together.

Marc and Eddy, who were 45 years old, were killed by their doctor through lethal injection at the Brussels University Hospital, in Jette.

According to Dr. David Dufour: “The twins had a cup of coffee with family members, then they said their goodbyes before walking into the hospital room together in order to die. They were very happy. It was a relief to see the end of their suffering."

"The separation from their parents and brother was very serene and beautiful. There was a little wave of their hands and then they were gone," Dr. Dufour added.

Last year In Belgium, more than 1,000 people chose to end their lives by doctor-assisted lethal
injection, which is legal Belgium. Most people who chose to be killed, were terminally ill.

The twin brother’s situation was unique in that their illness was not terminal and they did not go blind before they were killed. Belgian law however, allows doctors to euthanize "suffering" patients who want to die if they are over 18 years old and mentally stable.

Belgian lawmakers are considering a bill that would extend euthanasia for patients with dementia and children, whose families and doctors agreed to end their suffering.
