Woman uses family social security numbers to file false tax returns

A woman was arrested and charged after stealing her family members’ social security numbers and filing false tax returns in order to get tax refunds, according to court proceedings in New York.

The woman who lives in the city of Hamburg, has been indicted on tax fraud charges after she stole social security numbers of seven family members as well as friends to file the false tax returns.

Sheri Becirovic, 46, has been charged with 17 separate counts, including conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to file fraudulent tax returns, filing a fraudulent tax return, misuse of social security numbers and aggravated identity theft.

The U.S. Attorney's Office claims that Becirovic, obtained the social security numbers along with a co-conspirator and used them to file false tax returns.

If convicted, Becirovic could face up to 20 years in prison.
