A doctor has mistakenly removed the entire hip of a healthy 30-year-old woman, according to hospital officials in Sweden.

An experienced surgeon of Gavle, mistakenly removed the entire hip joint of the healthy woman and left it on the operating table during what was supposed to be a minor procedure to remove a small growth in the hip area.

"I've never heard of anything like this," Lars-Goran, who is the chief medical officer of the hospital, said.

Instead of removing the growth, the surgeon allegedly removed the entire hip joint and laid it on the operating table before the error was discovered.

The surgeon and other doctors who were called to try to resolve the problem, tried to reattach the hip with a set of metal plates and screws.

However, the patient developed an infection from the hip procedure and never healed properly, causing doctors to later replace the hip with prosthesis.

A spokesperson for the hospital said that the surgeon is devastated with the error, which was explained as an "error of judgment regarding the anatomy of women," according to reports.

"I deeply regret what has happened. It is a deeply troubling health error," he said.
