(Scroll down for video) A man was arrested and charged after attempting to murder a leader of a Bulgarian political party during a speech, according to video uploaded to the Internet.

The Bulgarian politician survived the assassination attempt.

The man stormed the stage and put a gun to the head of the leader while he was giving his speech.

Fortunately for Ahmed Dogan, leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, the gun failed to fire, giving him time to react and hit the would-be murderer.

Before the man could attempt a second shot, the unidentified suspect was slammed to the ground by security guards and delegates attending the conference in Sofia.

Video showed the man jumping out of the audience and disrupting the speech given by the 58-year-old Dogan, who has led the party for nearly 25 years.

In just more than a second, he raised the gun to the head of Dogan, but it failed to fire. The politician went after the gun and fell to the ground while attempting to flee.

Security guards and delegates ran on stage and fought the attacker to the ground. A separate group formed around Dogan to create a protective shield.

Politicians then rushed on stage and started delivering blows to the suspect. He was photographed after being detained by police, bloodied and bruised.

“Ahmed Dogan is in good health. Everything is under control," a Movement for Rights and Freedoms official said.
