A 20-year-old woman won a lawsuit against a potential employer after she was told that she was too young for the job.
The woman from Sweden, was denied a job as a receptionist for being "too young." The company “prefers women over the age of 22.”
The woman sued and was awarded $7,700 in a settlement by the Equality Ombudsman in Sweden.
The 20-year-old woman applied for a summer job as a receptionist at a guest house. She had experience in similar work. She also had secondary school education that includes a program in the field of hotels and tourism.
After applying for the job, she got a letter from the guest house citing the reason why she would not be hired.
"Thank you for your request, but unfortunately, we are looking for someone older," the letter stated.
The guest house justified the move by explaining that they have a policy of only hiring people who are at least 22 years old.
After reading the letter, the 20-year-old woman contacted the Swedish Equality Ombudsman. They investigated the case and determined the rejection was a clear case of age discrimination.
The guest house admitted to violating discrimination laws and they gave the woman $7,700.
