(Scroll down for video) A 19-year-old female prisoner killed herself while prison guards recorded the incident on video, an investigation committee has learned.
Prison guards stood by and recorded the teenage prisoner as she gasped for breath while slowly suffocating in her cell.
Ashley Smith died at the Kitchener’s Grand Institution for Women, located in southern Ontario.
For the first time, the full video depicting the troubled teen’s asphyxia was played before a jury this week, during the official investigation.
The video shows guards watching the 19-year-old woman through a hatch in her cell. By the time the video starts, it was 6:45 a.m.
The guards had been debating for about 10 minutes, what can be done about Smith, according to press reports in Canada.
Smith was institutionalized for much of her adolescence in New Brunswick, before being transferred to the adult federal system.
Blood vessels in her face and eyes had burst, and her face had spots from the previous times she had tried to suffocate herself.
The guards had been advised that Smith was looking for attention and were instructed not to intervene unless she stopped breathing.
