Prosecutors said Saturday, that a caregiver’s boyfriend hit the 4-year-old boy and ended up killing him in Amityville, New York, all because the boy did not take a nap.

Prosecutors said in court that Jonathan Thompson, 31, admitted to punching Adonis Reed, lacerating his liver twice. Thompson was indicted on charges of second-degree murder Saturday morning, in Suffolk County 4th District Courthouse in Central Islip.

Authorities said that Adonis, was living with his godmother and her boyfriend, Thompson, because the child’s 21-year-old mother is homeless. An aunt said that things could have been different if she had custody of Adonis.

"I tried so long to help and instead of giving the child to a qualified aunt, they gave him to an abuser," she said.

Thompson pleaded not guilty at the hearing and was ordered held without bail. Following an anonymous 911 call on Wednesday, Adonis was found alone and beaten unconscious inside the rented apartment house in Amityville.

There was no sight of an adult and the child was motionless, unable to be saved by CPR.
Adonis was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, but attempts to revive him failed and he was pronounced dead shortly before 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
