Man hit and killed by garbage truck after slipping under its wheels

A man was hit and killed by a garbage truck in New York, the New York City Police Department said in a statement.

The 66-year-old Staten Island man died after being hit by a private garbage truck in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City.

Around 2:20 p.m. on Friday, Thomas Berry was crossing to the west side of Ninth Avenue and 29th Street, when he fell into the rear wheels of the slow moving garbage truck that was heading south on Ninth Avenue, police said.

Berry, 56, lived in an apartment on Crescent Avenue in Staten Island. After the accident, Berry was taken to Beth Israel Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The operator of the 2007 Mack truck that hit Berry remained at the scene. No charges will be issued against the driver, police said.
