(Scroll down for video) A teacher in California, was arrested and charged after police uncovered shocking child sexual abuse involving at least 20 children, according to a statement made by the Los Angeles Police Department.
The former Los Angeles Unified School District teacher was arrested Wednesday, on suspicion of committing lewd acts and molesting 20 children and an adult, police authorities said.
The charges were filed against Robert Pimentel, 57, who taught at George Torre Jr. Elementary School in Wilmington.
Prosecutors filed 15 charges against Pimentel, involving at least a dozen alleged victims. The charges allege sexual abuse and lewd acts on children, according to court documents.
Authorities said that the teacher is suspected of inappropriately touching children under and over their clothing.
Detectives suspect that Pimentel victimized eight other children and an adult. Pimentel along with the school principal, were immediately removed after the district learned of the allegations.
United Teachers Los Angeles issued a statement, saying that the union leaders were not familiar with the details of the case and that the accused former teacher was not a union member.
The union will not be involved in his defense, the statement said.
"The allegations described are horrible. As teachers have an obligation to maintain the trust of our students and their parents," the union said. "We urge our members and the community to cooperate with police investigations under way in this case," the union added.
