(Scroll down for video) An extremely old man killed his elderly wife, according to a police statement in Kansas.
The 93-year-old man who was accused of killing his wife, thought he had also stabbed himself to death and called paramedics en route to a hospital asking "why am I still awake?" Authorities said.
Harry Irwin is charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of his 95-year-old wife Grace, in Kansas City, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said Wednesday.
The couple's daughter found Grace Irwin bleeding on a bed and Harry Irwin laying in a recliner with a knife in his hand, according to a probable cause statement filed by detectives on the case.
Harry Irwin had apparently slit his wrists and plunged a knife into his chest, detectives said in the statement. Grace Irwin was pronounced dead at the scene.
On the way to hospital, police said Irwin stated: "Yes, I killed her then I killed myself. Why am I awake?" Irwin tried to stab himself in the heart, but instead he stabbed his rib, according to the probable cause statement.
He said that his wife was arguing and yelling at him all night, and he could not take it anymore, according to the statement.
"Given the facts, the murder charge was justified," Baker said. "His wife did not deserve another person to decide when they will die," Baker added.
Harry Irwin remained in hospital on Wednesday night, authorities said.
