Having braces on the teeth can be uncomfortable and unattractive, but important for a beautiful smile and for a good bite.

The usual time frame for braces on teeth is between one year and three years. However, for one boy, his braces were left on his teeth for 11 years, resulting in straight but rotten teeth.

Devin Bost of Portland, Oregon, said that he suffered tooth decay and periodontal disease from having his braces from ages 7 to 18, while living in Eugene, Oregon.

Now, Bost has filed a lawsuit against his orthodontist for leaving his braces on his teeth for 11 years.

“Some of his teeth must be replaced with implants, but others cannot be fixed because they have rotted to the jaw,” his attorney, David Hollander, said.

According to the lawsuit, his mother, who is a medical doctor, received an urgent phone call from the orthodontist office of Brad Chvatal, saying "that he needed to have the braces removed
immediately."

How Bost could have spent most of his elementary school and middle school years with braces, remains a mystery.

"We're not really sure what happened," Hollander said. Bost is seeking $185,000 for dental bills and $15,000 for pain and suffering.

The president of the American Association of Orthodontists said that it is "extremely unusual" for someone to wear braces for 11 years.
