|Bei Bei Shuai|
(Scroll down for video) A woman was arrested and charged with murder after she ate rat poison that killed her baby, according to court proceedings in Indiana.
Bei Bei Shuai spent an entire night hugging her 3-day-old baby while crying.
Earlier, she had agreed to take her young daughter, Angel, off from life support. Angel had bleeding in her brain and would not be able to survive, the doctors had told Shuai.
The baby died in the arms of Shuai. Then the police arrived. Shuai was arrested a couple of months later and was charged with murder and attempted feticide after Shuai, while pregnant, had attempted suicide by ingesting rat poison.
Now, two years after the death of Angel, the charges against Bei Bei Shuai continues to raise provocative legal and moral issues.
On one hand, there is a debate on whether her actions were criminal, partly because there are issues of intent, but also because there is some doubt whether the death was the direct result of the rat poison.
However, in more general terms, the decision to file charges by the Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry, has pushed Shuai’s case in the center of one of the most highly charged debates of our time, the rights of women versus the rights of unborn children.
Some women’s rights advocates believe that the mother should not face any charges for causing the death of her child, according to reports.
