Two homeless men were arrested on charges of murder after allegedly beating another homeless man outside a fast food restaurant, prosecutors in California said.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced that a dog was also seen attacking 45-year-old Derrick Hamilton.

31-year-old Joseph Johnson and 30-year-old Derek Miller were each charged with one count of murder. They were arraigned in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

According to the police investigation, the two defendants are accused of getting into a fight with Hamilton, in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant in the 700 block of Cesar Chavez Avenue.

Both Johnson and Miller allegedly beat and stomped the victim. Prosecutors said Miller’s dog also attacked Hamilton, who was taken to a hospital, where he died.

If convicted as charged, both Johnson and Miller face a possible maximum sentence of 25 years to life in state prison.

Prosecutors asked for bail be set at more than $1 million for both Johnson and Miller.
